Greeting Esports Enthusiasts!

We’re excited to announce the official date of an upcoming event at Sedro-Woolley High School…The First Annual Sedro-Woolley High School Overwatch Open!

This is a live tournament that will be held at Sedro-Woolley High School on Saturday, February 16th! We will be taking teams from all over Washington State (and possibly Vancouver BC) to compete in an all day 6v6 Overwatch tournament. If you are new to high school esports, this is an excellent opportunity to give your students their first experience in a tournament atmosphere.

Tournament Details (if you are not familiar with Overwatch, you can use the details here to inform your students how it will work):

This tournament will be an all day event with a group stage and a single elimination bracket stage. The cost of the tournament will be $30 per team if registered and paid by February 8th or $40 per team after that. The registration link is at the bottom of this email. We will be accepting a maximum of 20 teams (up to 2 teams per high school, 6 students per team with up to 2 alternates) to compete, so register and pay early to reserve your spot!

The 20 teams will be split into 5 groups of 4. Each team will play each other team in the group once, with the top two winning records moving on to the single elimination bracket stage (Tiebreakers will be played at the end of the group stage). The group stage will be “Center Control” style map…this includes maps like Busan, Ilios, Lijiang Tower, Nepal, or Oasis).

The bracket stage will take the top two teams from every group (10 teams) and put them into a single elimination bracket. During the bracket stage, we will be playing an “Assault” style map using the same format as a ranked match in Overwatch (both teams will get an attack and defense stage). Assault maps include: Hanamura, Horizon Lunar Colony, Temple of Anubis, and Volskaya Industries.

Top three teams will earn prizes (TBA)

Throughout the tournament, there will be opportunities for students to engage in other activities while they are not in an official tournament match. We will have several stations with Super Smash Bros Ultimate able to be played (students could even organize their own informal tournament if they like). In addition to that, we will have at least one VR station available for students to try some Virtual Reality games. We are working on a deal with another company to bring in more stations.

Schedule
8am – Registration Begins

8:45am – Announcements and Tournament Instructions

9am – Group stage begins

12pm-2pm – Group stage ends and Bracket stage begins**

2pm – 5pm – Awards Ceremony**

**Times are all an estimate because of the variable length of the games. However, the entire tournament should take somewhere from 5-8 hours to finish

Other Details:

  • Food will NOT be provided. Students are encouraged to bring lunch and snacks. However, we are working with a local food truck to possibly park at the high school for lunch hours (11am to 2pm)

  • It is strongly encouraged that an adult representative from your school be present with your school’s teams, however, I will allow teams there unaccompanied.

  • ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO SHOW A CURRENT ASB CARD TO PROVE THAT THEY ARE A CURRENT STUDENTS AT THEIR REPRESENTED HIGH SCHOOL. IF A STUDENT DOES NOT HAVE AN ASB CARD, THEY MUST PROVIDE PROOF THAT THEY ARE CURRENTLY ATTENDING THE SCHOOL THEY ARE REPRESENTING.

  • I will have a Discord Server setup shortly specifically for communication before/during/after the Tournament.
